A mid-century design spanning decades, Arco’s recognizable form can be seen everywhere from homes around the world, to the silver screen and the best of the best restaurants and hotels .
Arco, by Italian brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, has solidified its place as an icon since its inception in 1962; and unsurprisingly, there are a plethora of knockoffs. The first legal action was taken by Flos in 1971, and it has also sparked an intense debate about fake furniture in Britain when Samantha Cameron, wife of then UK Prime Minister, publicly purchased a replica.
The iconic floor lamp is also a Hollywood favorite. The next time you watch your favorite movie, pay close attention and you might catch Arco lurking in the background.
So, how can you gaurantee that your Arco is the real deal? Read on to find out what to look for.
Identifying an Original
Look for the logo! Peek through the perforated lamp casing and you should find “Flos” etched on the edge.
The base is constructed with Carrara marble to ensure balance of the lamp. Replicas often substitute Carrara marble with fakes, as it significantly reduces cost. There are many ways to spot artificial marble, and one simple way is to look closely at the pattern – real marble is one of a kind, and so the pattern is always different.
The stem is made of stainless-steel with a satin finish, and is divided into 3 sections to achieve the delicate arc while maintaining the balance.
