What's Next for the Design World?
Interview with Carey Schuster, CEO & President, Yellow Goat Design
Things are changing very quickly for the design world, what do you think this means for original designers and creators?
We, as a community, have to maintain and amplify our creative voices which can often get lost in a tidal wave of stress and budget concerns. Some of the greatest ideas and innovations come during times like this. We should embrace the change of pace and tap into the changes around us for inspiration and execution of ideas and designs.
How do you think this will change how and what is designed?
I think the world at large has changed and we have new concerns to think about: space/social interaction/physical and mental health all being major players. It may be a little early to say exactly how this will change but it’s inspiring and motivating to see so many people already thinking about it and having the conversation. Healthcare has and will continue to be an important player, while workplaces could change quite dramatically. I know for sure that, as designers and creators, we all want and should expect to see a profound movement of great forward thinking that results in fresh, inspiring, and provocative designs.
Will lighting play a role in all of this?
Absolutely. So many of our workplace, healthcare, and hospitality spaces rely on getting the lighting right. I think it’s going to depend on the location, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see lighting and art play an even bigger role in design. People will be looking for elements to soothe, inspire, encourage, and even process what has happened. In looking at history, it’s obvious that lighting and art will be contributors and vehicles for this movement.
What would you say to original designers looking to process all this?
Practice and deepen your talent. Use the current state of affairs as inspiration to tap into your creativity and craft at a whole new level. Take advantage of the time we have now all been allotted. New skills and crafts can be learned, while existing ones can be practiced and perfected. It’s a special time that we should all be making the most of. Outlets like Be Original Americas help support and encourage a community that will be affected by the economic shift that we face. Innovations will emerge. Original designs will prevail. I can’t wait to see what this community comes up with during this time. I’m confident that we will be seeing some of our best designs yet.
