The Egg™ chair, designed in 1958 by architect Arne Jacobsen, is a timeless icon of Danish design. Like a sculptor, Jacobsen tirelessly developed and perfected the chair’s shape by experimenting with wire and plaster in his garage. Today, it is recognized worldwide as a highlight of Jacobsen’s legendary career and a hallmark achievement of Scandinavian design.

Here is what to look for when comparing an original Egg™ chair with a copy:

  1. An authentic Egg™ chair is sewn by hand. Often, the sewing craftsmanship on a copy will be of poor quality and lack elegant finishing details.

  2. The dimensions of copies will vary from an original and appear “thicker”, especially in areas where the shape of the shell is sharply curved. The base of a copy is frequently less substantial than an original and will have a shiny finish, whereas an authentic chair with have a brushed finish. Toes on the base are frequently of very poor quality and therefore not durable or long-lasting.

  3. Copies will not have Fritz Hansen tags sewn directly onto the chair and cushion, nor will they ship with a branded hangtag and companion ID number engraved on the base.

  4. Finally, one will recognize that the weight of a copy is often very heavy compared to the original.
